Gran Torino (2008 ) follows Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood), a recently widowed and embittered Korean War veteran, who lives in a deteriorating Detroit neighborhood now populated largely by Hmong immigrants and plagued by gang violence. When a local teen, Thao Lor (Bee Vang), is pressured by gang members to steal Walt’s treasured 1972 Ford Gran Torino, the act triggers an unlikely friendship between the two, and sends both down a path of suffering and redemption. Dark, gritty, reflective, and at times humorous, Gran Torino explores themes of masculinity, sacrifice, redemption, forgiveness, and change.
